:: The old city :: One of Chiang Mai's main district. Built over 700 years ago, the city was once an entirely walled square surrounded by the moat. The main gate to enter the old city is Thaphae Gate, within the old city there are many sites to see. The attractions are a large number of temples as Chiang Mai was and remains, an important center of Buddhism and many of those temples have a long and significant history. For many people the greatest joy of the old city is to be had strolling down the myriad of small lanes and sub sois and finding their treasures. There are a wealth of small shops selling traditional crafts and arts, as well as plenty of great places to eat and drink if you become weary and require a rest stop.
:: The walking streets :: Both saturday market at Wualai road and sunday market at Ratchadamnoen road are good places to buy souvenirs. The markets fully with varieties of locally made products, mulberry tree umbrella, silverware, lacquerware, woodcraft, pottery, necklace from hill tribes and much more.
